Liner Notes

A playlist to accompany Daryl Easlea's book "Everybody Dance - Chic and the Politics of Disco" There's no actual Chic in this playlist, but it mixes up artists that influenced members of the band (e.g. Hendrix, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Roxy Music), stuff that was around both at their formative stage (early Bowie, Roundtree) and when the band was its commercial height (Miss You, The Hustle), tracks that the Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards produced or wrote either together (Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Sheila) or individually (Bowie's Let's Dance album, the Power Station). Then there's a couple of tracks with particular connections to the band like The Boys are Back in Town, which Edwards and Rogers used as intro music for one of their early bands, and A Fifth of Beethoven, which - as well as heralding a certain tackiness in disco - forced them to change the name of their band from The Big Apple Band. The tracks by the Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash show Chic's influence on rap from its early days, and the Laurie Anderson track (on which Nile Rodgers plays) is just a personal favourite to show the diversity of influences.
